First created in India 3,000 years ago, mala beads have roots in Hinduism, Buddhism and yoga. The term “mala” is a Sanskrit word for “meditation garland”. Originally, mala beads were used for a special style of meditation called Japa, which means “to recite.” Often called prayer beads, anyone can wear these beautiful pieces. You don’t have to be religious or have any spiritual practice. You can simply wear them as a reminder of an intention you’ve set. And if you are seeking a calmer mind, body and spirit.

Between each 108 semi-precious stone beads is a hand knot of cotton thread. Different gemstones have different healing qualities. The Mala is finished off with a cotton tassel.

The number 108 is significant for numerous reasons. Some believe there are 108 stages on the journey of the human soul, while others associate the possibility of enlightenment with taking only 108 breaths a day, while in deep meditation. It has been said there are 108 energy lines connecting to the heart.

The 109th stone, the “Guru bead” symbolizes gratitude and our connection to the divine. It is a way to say thank-you to all the spiritual teachers who have helped us on our path to enlightenment.
The tassel symbolizes the lotus flower, purity of the body/speech and mind. While rooted in mud, the lotus flowers blossom on long stalks as if floating above the muddy waters.

From me to you: Between each bead is a knot in the cotton thread, when tying each of those knots Mantra is nfused its meaning into each of the knots.

Mala Beads: Lava Rock is a grounding stone that strengthens one's connection to Mother Earth. It gives us strength and courage, allowing us stability through times of change. It provides guidance and understanding in situations where we may need to "bounce back". A calming stone, it is very useful in dissipating anger. You can also apply aroma therapy oils on lava rock bead as it is quite porous it retain the fragrance.

Black Onyx is strength giving. It provides support in difficult or cofusing circumstances and during times of enormous mental or physical stress. Centering your energy and aligning it with a higher power, accessing higher guidance, is facilitatied by Onyx as is connection with the whole. It aids learning lessons, imparting self-confidence and helping you to be at ease in your surroundings.

Why 108?
The number’s significance is open to interpretation. But 108 has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga. Traditionally, malas, or garlands of prayer beads, come as a string of 108 beads (plus one for the “guru bead,” around which the other 108 beads turn like the planets around the sun). A mala is used for counting as you repeat a mantra—much like the Catholic rosary.
Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Such phenomena have given rise to many examples of ritual significance. According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. And there are also 108 Upanishads and 108 marma points, or sacred places of the body.
